Description

[SAINT-MARTIN (Louis-Claude de). Tableau naturel des rapports qui existent entre Dieu, l'Homme et l'Univers. Edinburgh, sn, 1782. 2 parts in one vol. in-8 dark brown morocco, spine ribbed, gilt title, gilt fillet framing the boards (period binding). Covers and corners worn, a few rubbed, a few small brown spots. SAINT-MARTIN (Louis Claude de), known as the Unknown Philosopher, famous enlightened philosopher, born in Amboise in 1743, died in Aunay near Paris in 1803. First officer in the regiment of Foix in garrison in Bordeaux, where he knew the Jew Martinez de Pasqualis, Portuguese of Oriental origin. Then resigning, he traveled to England, Italy, etc. and during the Revolution was for a while a "student-teacher" at the Ecole Normale. He was constantly in contact with the distinguished women of his time: Mme de Krudener, Mme d'Albany, Mme de Noailles, etc. (Caillet). "A rather unusual work by the Theosophist Claude de St-Martin. It is his second to date: I know of three different editions, all three published under the misleading indication of Edinburgh (Lyon), and the year 1782. One is discernible at first glance, because the printer has constantly used the old typographical character of the elongated s: f. To distinguish the two others, it is necessary to have recourse to small typographical details of the text and also of the Title: they resemble each other very much...". S. de Guaita. (Barbier IV, 650; Caillet 8784.)
