Description

[MANETHON]. Apotelesmaticorum libri sex. Nunc primum ex Bibliotheca Medicea editi cura Jacobi Gronovii, qui etiam Latine vertit ac notas adjecit. Leiden, Fr. Haaring, 1698. Small in-4, [9] ff. 296 pp. with Greek text and Latin translation following, half calf, smooth spine decorated, black title page, marbled pages (19th c. binding). Spine unstained, clumsy paper repair to title leaf. Very rare first edition of this long piece in verse dealing with the influence of the stars on human life, erroneously attributed to the famous Egyptian priest Manetho (3rd century B.C.), keeper of the sacred archives at the temple of Heliopolis and author of the famous Chronology. The real author seems to be a homonym of the 4th century of our era, Manethon of Sebennytos. (Brunet III, 1362. Absent from Caillet as well as from Dorbon).
