Description

TREDGOLD (Th.). A Practical Treatise on Railroads and the Cars Intended to Travel on Them... Translated from the English by T. Duverne. Paris, Bachelier, 1826. In-8 black half-maroquin, smooth spine decorated (period binding). Beautiful provenance from the library of Prince SOLTYKOFF with his armorial bookplate and the stamp of the library of San Donato. Engraved bookplate of Prince Roland BONAPARTE. Anatole Demidoff (1812-1870, in Russian: ???????? ?????????? ???????), a Russian industrialist and patron of the arts, was the first prince of San Donato. He had one of the largest art collections of the time, inherited from his father, which he enlarged considerably, going so far as to devote 14 rooms to it in his villa in San Donato (near Florence), which also contained a library of 40,000 volumes. Through his marriage to Princess Mathilde, Prince Demidoff was the son-in-law of Jerome Bonaparte (1784-1860). He was created "prince of San Donato", by decree of October 20, 1840, in order to allow the princess to keep her title, not recognized in Russia. The marriage was a failure: the prince, jealous of the closeness between Mathilde and the tsar Nicolas (their mothers were both princesses of Wurtemberg), was violent towards her and refused to leave his mistress. Mathilde fled to Paris in 1846 with the jewels of her dowry and the separation was authorized by the tsar in 1847. Roland Bonaparte was the grandson of Lucien Bonaparte. He built up a superb library of 150,000 volumes. He bought a large part of the San Donato library at a public auction in 1880.
