PICART (Bernard). Ceremonies and religious customs of idolatrous peoples represented by figures drawn by the hand of Bernard Picart: with a historical explanation, & some curious dissertations. - Ancient superstitions and modern vulgar prejudices that have induced people to customs and practices contrary to religion. Amsterdam, Bernard, 1728-1743. 11 vol. in-folio, porphyry calf, spines decorated with triple gilt fillet on the sides, double gilt fillet on the edges, gilt inner border. The work contains: Volume I (tomé 2 on the back): Jews and Catholic Christians with 30 plates; Volume II (tomé 4 on the back): Catholics with 33 plates; Volume III (tomé 1 at the back): Ceremonies of the peoples of the West Indies with 45 plates; Volume IV (tomé 3 on the back): of the idolatrous peoples with 58 plates; Volume V: ceremonies of the Greeks and Protestants with 19 plates; Volume VI: Anglicans, Quaquers, Anabaptists, etc. with 14 plates; Volume VII: Mahometans with 26 plates; Supplements : Volume VIII: "au titre tome septieme seconde partie. dissertations de Banier et de Le Mascrier" with 5 plates; Volume IX: "Tome VIII au titre" which contains a historical parallel of religious ceremonies & the description of various singular usages, allegedly religious, or which have to do with religion (24 plates); Superstitions: Volume I (tome 10 on the back): with 11 plates; Volume II (tome 11 on the back): with 2 plates. That is to say in all 11 vignettes on the titles, 14 vignettes in heading and 267 plates out of text of which numerous double or folding. Withdrawal of the first 3 volumes (with dates of 1735 and 1739) with increases in the text and original edition of the following ones. The collection is quite complete with the 2 volumes of supplements and the 2 volumes of superstitions which are very difficult to find. (Cohen 134-135.) This work is a compilation of the writings of R. Simon, J. Abbadie, Dupin, Thiers, P. Le Brun, Boulainvilliers, Reland, etc. on the same subject. The writing is due to J. Fréd. Bernard, bookseller-publisher, to Minister Bernard, to Bruzen de la Martinière and others. A fine copy, with a few small old restorations to the bindings and a few marginal wetnesses never reaching the engravings. Excellent edition of the engravings (including the first 3 volumes).
