Description

[MIRABEAU (Victor Riqueti de). The Friend of Men, or Treatise on Population. Hamburg, Hérold, 1764-1760. 8 parts in 6 vols. in-12. Fawn calf, smooth spine decorated, red tr. (binding of the time). Small damages to some headpieces but a good copy. New edition published after Mirabeau's adherence to the physiocrat doctrine. The first edition appeared in 1756. Volumes 1 to 3 are dated 1764 with the mention of fifth edition; volume 4 dated 1760 with the mention of sixth edition; volume 5 dated 1762; volume 6 dated 1762. Complete with the 6 economic tables. According to the author the true wealth consists only in the population. Now the population depends on its subsistence, and the subsistence is drawn only from agriculture. Thus for this convinced physiocrat, everything depends on agriculture: it remains the first of the arts. Mirabeau will line up behind the idea that "The more you make the land bring in, the more you populate it". Rare complete work.
