Description

French school of the 18th century Follower of Jean-Baptiste PATER (Valenciennes, 1695 - Paris, 1736) Fête galante in the open air Oil on canvas 101 x 135 cm Son of Antoine Joseph Pater, a master sculptor, Jean-Baptiste Pater received his first artistic training in his father's workshop. His remarkable gifts for drawing and painting enabled him to join the workshop of Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) in the 1710s. At his side, Pater developed the subjects of fêtes galantes, a theme launched by his master a few years earlier. Our painting is a copy of the work by Jean-Baptiste Pater in the Sanssouci Castle in Potsdam (Fest im Freien, inv. 1962.11). The delicate treatment and the precision of the brushstrokes suggest that the artist was in contact with Jean-Baptiste Pater and that he was able to create this bold, large-format composition by observing his work.
