Hinrichs'sche Buchhandlung, 1923-1935. Gr.-8° (Tl. I) and oblong fol. (Tl. II). Loose sheets in 2 brown OLwd.-cases with gilt stamped spine labels. Rare first edition of this work, which was published in installments over a long period of time and corrected, supplemented and in parts rearranged several times during publication, especially with regard to the 2nd part. After the early and sudden death of the author, a 3rd vol. of the work, originally planned in 4 parts, was only completed from the papers left behind by his widow Leonore (née Oppler, 1890-1982) with the help of Heinrich Schäfer (1868-1957) in the years 1937 to 1941 and is of exceptional rarity. The planned 4th vol. was probably not completed due to the war. - On the collation: Part I: 3 vols., 11 p., with 424 often multi-folded plates. Plates (the fold-outs also numbered XX.b, XX.c, XX.d), with 3 printed original delivery brochures for this part. - Part II: 46 p., with 236 mostly folded plates (several folds). Plates, numbered up to No. 202, as well as various a, b & c plates, supplementary and replacement sheets. - Both parts complete, with corrected corrigendae (!) published for the individual deliveries and continuously amended overviews of the planned complete edition. - The completeness of the 2nd vol. is revealed by comparing all the indexes (list of plates, list of illustrations and corrigenda) with the plates and their numbering. - On Wreszinski see Thomas L. Gertzen: Judentum und Konfession in der Geschichte der deutschsprachigen Ägyptologie, pp. 172ff. - Enclosed: 1 typewritten sheet from the publisher with announcement and list of the last deliveries of Part II as well as informative notes on the history of editing. - Provenance: From the library of the Karl Sudhoff Institute for the History of Medicine and Natural Sciences at Leipzig University, which was dissolved at the end of 2018. When it was founded in 1906, it was the world's first institute for the history of medicine and gained considerable importance for the emergence of modern history of science and source-oriented cultural studies, far beyond the German-speaking world. The affiliated library was largely designed by the institute's full professor Karl Sudhoff (1853-1938), the most important medical historian of the 20th century, and bore his name from 1938 in recognition of Sudhoff's historiographical merits. - With stamps of the Institute for the History of Medicine and dat. Redemption stamps of the Leipzig University Library "Bibliotheca Albertina". - Occasional minimal marginal tears, some browning due to paper, generally well-preserved.
