Michel Eyquem de Montaigne is so well known in 16th-century literature that his main work, his Essais, remains one of the masterpieces of human thought. Let's just remember that he was born in 1533, in his family's château in Périgord. He learned Latin before learning French, then Greek, and, armed with his solid erudition, studied law in Bordeaux, where he was appointed councillor to the Bordeaux Parliament. It was on this occasion that he met La Boétie, for whom he had one of those one of those indescribable friendships of which only great souls are capable (Larousse). Montaigne left public office early, was elected mayor of Bordeaux and represented his compatriots at the Estates of Blois (1557). After his father's death, he took refuge in his château, where he began writing his Essais. Here, Montaigne drew on the strength of doubt, a skepticism that, going against the grain of the political and religious compartmentalization of his time, led him to risk tolerance (In French in the text). He then travelled through France, Switzerland, Germany and Italy, as observer and philosopher, returning to France to devote himself entirely to study and philosophy. He died of esquinancie, more simply known as angina, in 1592. The Essais contain three books, the first two of which appeared in the present edition in 1580. The pagination is very fanciful. We compared our copy page by page with that of the BnF and the Bodleian Library, Oxford, described by Sayce, and found differences in the pagination of volume II, without any change to the text: cahier QQq for the BnF and cahier HHhh for the Bodleian. As Sayce notes, there are probably no two perfectly identical copies. Sayce also noted different states for the titles and errata. Our copy is in the second state. Finally, our copy contains first and second printing remarks in the text. Some passages have been underlined in ink. A very fine copy, despite small stains and faint marginal spotting on several leaves of Volume II. Provenance: F. Estienne (handwritten bookplate partly faded on title and flyleaf of second volume).

Fourth edition, largely original, of the Essais, the first to contain the third book and the last to appear during the author's lifetime. The first two books of the Essais were published in 1580 by Simon Millanges in Bordeaux, followed by two revised and enlarged editions in 1582 and 1587. This edition, marked on the title cinquiesme edition is in fact the fourth, and we know of no edition with a fourth edition on the title. fourth edition. According to Le Petit, this bibliographical anomaly may be explained as follows: there are a few copies that are entirely consistent with the first edition of 1580 ( M.D.LXXX) which bear the date 1583 marked M.D.LXXXIII. Close examination has revealed that the end of the Roman numeral III had been added with printing ink and a compositor. According to Le Petit, Simon Millanges, publisher of the first and second editions, found unsold copies of his first edition in 1583 and tried to sell them, pretending they were a new edition. Abel L'Angelier, publisher of the real fourth edition, was fooled by this forged edition and considered his own to be a fifth edition. For the first time, Montaigne added a third book to this fourth, extensively revised edition. whose more rigorously personal, more intimate approach... was to ensure, more than anything else, the durability of the Essais. This was the last edition published by Montaigne, who died in 1592. Title entirely engraved on metal, surrounded by a beautiful Renaissance frame with scrolled motifs, putti... Copy with engraved title in second state. Small loss at upper head, binding restored, beginnings of splitting at jaws. First edition by Mlle de Gournay, based on Montaigne's manuscripts, and increased by a third. From the first edition of Essais in 1580 until his death in 1592, Montaigne constantly reworked and expanded his main work in successive editions. On his death, he left a copy of the 1588 edition riddled with annotations, additions, spoilers and more. His widow Françoise de Montaigne entrusted the author's daughter-in-law daughter-in-law of the author, Marie de Gournay, assisted by Pierre de Brach, to undertake a new edition, faithfully incorporating all modifications. The edition, to which Marie de Gournay took particular care, was shared between Abel L'Angelier and Michel Sonnius and published in 1595. Copy conforms to Sayce's description except for one variant (page 144 numbered 44). The title is addressed to L'Angelier, the notice from Montaigne Au lecteur is printed on the verso of the table (ī4v) and the inserts on pages 63/64 and 69/70 are missing. Many copies of this edition include autograph corrections by Marie de Gournay, made during the printing process, which are not present here. A very fine copy, despite minor old restorations and a few smudges on the boards. Illegible handwriting on the second cover. The copy has been washed and very well established. There are faint stains on 2 pages (279-281), one page slightly soiled by printing ink (360) and tiny holes due to ink oxidation on 6 pages (29, 47, 49, 55 157 and 67). Provenance: GH (unidentified bookplate).
