The advent of the Macedonian king Philip II in 339 B.C., the father of Alexander, is characterized by his monetary reform in silver and the creation of gold coins which soon became popular in the Greek world. The introduction of the gold coinage gives us beautiful "philippeioi" stateres with the head of Apollo, such as this one, with noble and severe features which inspired all the ancient world until Gaul. Philip II was the first Greek king who dared to associate himself with the immortal gods, in some way to divinize himself!
