Barolomeo Passerotti
Barolomeo Passerotti
FRIAR ANTONIO DA MONTECICCARDO
oil on canvas, 90.5x76 cm
inscribed: "F. ANTONIUS A MONTE SICARDO.SA"
on the back: cartouches
made in the 1680s
The work is accompanied by expertise by Professor Daniele Benati
The inscription at the top of the work makes it possible to identify the person depicted. He is Friar Antonio da Monteciccardo, in the present province of Pesaro-Urbino, a Capuchin who died in Macerata in 1550 and is mentioned in the Flores Seraphici, a compendium of the lives of the most distinguished Capuchin Friars Minor of the time.
Of the composition, as pointed out by Professor Benati, there is another smaller redaction that has come with the correct attribution to Passerotti from the Zambeccari collection at the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna
