Patek Philippe, Chronometro Gondolo, n° 254584, Mvt. 151425, circa 1880/1900. Gondolo & Labouriau, Patek Philippe's agents in Rio de Janeiro in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, sold some 180 watches under subscription to as many members of their "watch enthusiasts" society in 79 weeks, each paying just $10 per week and a draw for the watch received each weekend. In the end, everyone paid $790 and owned their own Patek Philippe, which developed a special mechanism for the occasion. One of the first watches created by Patek Philippe for the South American continent. The Gondolo collection takes its name from the famous Rio de Janeiro retailer Gondolo & Labouriau, who had a very close and fruitful relationship with Patek Philippe between 1872 and 1927. This privileged relationship led to the creation of timepieces designed exclusively for this Brazilian retailer and christened "Chronometro Gondolo". The collection initially consisted of pocket watches, supplemented in the 1920s by the first wristwatches. At a time when Europe was going through difficult times, marked by the First World War, Gondolo & Labouriau alone sold almost a third of all Patek Philippe watches produced. Sales were so spectacular that in Brazil, the word "Patek" became synonymous with "watch".
