II.260 The Myths Portfolio is one of Andy Warhol's most sought-after portfolios. Andy Warhol's Myths portfolio, consisting of ten silkscreens made in 1981, contains images of mythical and iconic figures of 1960s culture. With this work, once again Andy Warhol displays an unerring sense for the leitmotifs of his time: contemporary images that capture the modern imagination just as the gods and goddesses of ancient mythology once did. In Myths, Warhol refers not to remote civilizations, but to the beginnings of cinema and imaginary characters beloved and recognized by millions around the world. In fact, most of the images in the series are taken from old Hollywood films or 1950s/60s television and take up the idea of a universal vision of America's once enchanted and powerful past. Included in the series are beloved children's characters such as Mickey Mouse, Howdy Doody, and Santa Claus, as well as timeless comic book characters such as the Superman we present today.
