Second revised edition of the work first published in 1616. - Important work of the important historian (here with his decorative portrait) with a historical geography of Germany and the customs and traditions of the Germanic peoples. - Constantly comparing tradition (his book begins with Tacitus' 'Germania') with his own experiences gathered on travels, Clüver gives a wealth of material on the folklore, settlement, religion and customs of the Germanic peoples. - The interesting copper plates show costumes and scenes from the daily life of the Germanic tribes, warriors with their weapons and acts of war. The maps engraved by N. Geylekerck with overviews of Europe, northern France, the Benelux countries, Germany, Scandinavia and the settlement areas of the Germanic tribes from northern Italy to the Baltic Sea. - The German geographer and historian Philipp Clüver (1580-1622) is considered a pioneer of historical geography.
