Contains in the appendix "Advertissement apologetique" (3 fol.), "in which Benoist vigorously defends himself against his opponents" (Darlow-M.). This second volume contains the OT from the Book of Psalms onwards, as well as the NT. - Benoist published his translation in 1566 with four Parisian publishers/printers, arguing that a French Catholic Bible should be opposed to the Calvinist Geneva Bible, but it was immediately condemned by the Sorbonne for heretical tendencies. - Regl. throughout. Title with partly shaved ownership marks, p. 180 in part 1 torn, p. 291 in part 2 with some text loss. Text loss. Occasional handwritten inscription - bookplate cardinal's hat above the Chigi family coat of arms. Possibly from the possession of Fabio Chigi (later Pope Alexander VII, appointed cardinal in 1651) or one of his two nephews (Flavio and Sigismondo), whom Alexander appointed cardinals after his election as pope in 1655.
