30 years ago, I asked Le Pho the question: "For you, who is the best Vietnamese painter of the 20th century?"
Without an ounce of hesitation, he answered me: "Vu Cao Dam", "Dam", announcing the name but evoking him immediately by his first name. Of course, this spontaneity could have been induced by Le Pho's elegance and his loyalty in friendship, but I saw in his eyes that he clearly placed "Dam" at the top of his pantheon of Vietnamese artists.
