Description

GIDE, André.

Retour de l'U.R.S.S. Paris, Gallimard, [1936]. In-12 [182 x 116] of 124 pp, (2) ff : red half-maroquin with corners, gilt filets, smooth spine decorated with a vertical band and a grey morocco title-piece bordered with a gilt fillet, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine kept (Magdelaine). First edition. Dedicated "to the memory of Eugène Dabit", it was printed at 240 numbered copies on vellum pur fil Lafuma Navarre (nº 224). Official guest of the Soviet government, André Gide brought back from his triumphant trip (June-August 1936) a bitter disillusionment, soon followed by a break with Stalinism. His text, written in the heat of the moment, provoked a lively polemic. Very nice copy in contemporary binding.
