Despite the modest audience of three hundred subscribers, André Gide was already a literary conscience and a leader. Precious autograph letter signed on the false title: to Madeleine // André // Cuverville // August 1900 The eldest of André Gide's cousins, Madeleine Rondeaux married the writer in 1895 without the marriage ever being consummated. The letters sent to her by her husband are always laconic. Madeleine died on April 17, 1938. An attentive reader, it seems that the stylistic correction on page 27 is in her hand.
