It was published clandestinely at 495 copies out of trade by Gallimard under the false address of "Bikini" : one of 450 numbered copies on vellum pur fil de Lana (n° 30).
The novel was to be published by Marc Barbezat: "Unable to pay the sum of five hundred thousand francs requested by Genet, he had to give it up. Genet then turned to
Gaston Gallimard, who agreed to publish Pompes funèbres, hesitating however to do it under his name and preferring to use a fictitious address" (Marie-Françoise Quignard).
