The essay first appeared in 1910. Freud later confided: "It is the only beautiful thing I have written."
The edition is illustrated in the frontispiece with a black reproduction of the painting by
Leonardo da Vinci The Virgin, the Child Jesus and Saint Anne, and in the text with a reproduction of a drawing by the artist and a diagram showing the shape of the vulture in the drapery of Mary in the painting.
Provenance: signature on the cover of the Dutch physician and professor of pathological anatomy Herman Joseph Gerard Wijers (1894-1974), dated January 19, 1920.
