The letter brings together two of the leading figures of the surrealist movement. In his dedication Crevel alludes to two poems that Benjamin Péret published in 1936 in the collection Je ne mange pas de ce pain-là, entitled: La mort de la mère Cognacq and La mort héroïque du lieutenant Condamine de la T our.
