A CELADON-GLAZED JAR, SUI TO TANG DYNASTY China, 581-907. The massively potted globular vessel is raised from a circular, sprawling foot towards a short cylindrical neck. The shoulders with four double-looped handles. A crackled pale celadon glaze covers the upper half of the jar entirely, thus revealing the buff ware below. George de Menasce (1890-1967) was born in Liverpool, where the Menasce family had cotton interests. His father, Baron Felix de Menasce, was a banker with Austro-Hungarian links. During the Second World War, George gave open house piano concerts in his home in Moharrem Bey, attended especially by British servicemen, for which he was awarded an OBE. After inheriting his mother's fortune, he began to build a substantial art collection with a strong focus on Chinese porcelain.
