Jacques Auguste Gaston LOUVRIER DE LAJOLAIS (1829-1908), attributed to Assas of the tribe of Derraga Charaga (Province of Oran) Pencil, ink and watercolor on paper Monogrammed AL in ink in the lower right corner Label on the back Framed under glass Size at sight : 18 x 10 cm. 7 x 4 in. Size with frame : 42 x 33 cm. 19,5 x 13 in. Slight discoloration of the paper, freckles on the passe-partout Jacques Auguste Gaston LOUVRIER DE LAJOLAIS (1829-1908) was a 19th century painter trained in the workshop of Charles GLEYRE (1806-1874). He then pursued a career as a diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After leaving this position, Jacques Auguste Gaston LOUVRIER DE LAJOLAIS became, in 1881, director of the National Schools of Decorative Art in Paris, Limoges and Aubusson. In 1862, he participated in the expedition of Mr. Commander V. COLOMIEU as a "tourist". This expedition is reported in the 8th volume of the Tour du Monde, in an article entitled "Voyage dans le Sahara algérien, de Géryville à Ouargla". Jacques Auguste Gaston LOUVRIER DE LAJOLAIS made several drawings for this publication, drawings that are very similar to the one presented in this sale.
