Description

James JOYCE.

Two Tales of Shem and Shaun. Fragments from Work in Progress. London, Faber and Faber, 1932. In-12, light blue Bradel paper boards, orange paper printed dust jacket (publisher's binding). First English edition. The original edition appeared in Paris in 1929 (The Black Sun Press): it included three fragments; the English edition includes two. A nice copy, complete with the printed dust jacket. Small defects to the dust jacket; spine browned and small tears. Handwritten letter on the dust jacket flap: With love & best wishes / from Mainie. According to a typed description attached to the copy, this mailing is from Joyce and is addressed to the painter Albert Gleizes who owned the copy. It would be more likely that it is in the hand of the Irish painter Mainie Jellett (1897-1944). She settled in Paris in 1920 where she studied in the studios of André Lhote and Albert Gleizes.
