Description

James JOYCE.

Ulysses. Paris, John Rodker published for the Egoist Press, 1922. In-4, paperback, blue paper cover, modern slipcase. Second edition in English, published in Paris: the cover is identical to the first edition, published eight months earlier. Implemented at Joyce's request by Harriet Weaver, who entrusted it to John Rodker: "Joyce urged H. Weaver to bring out the Egoist edition quickly, partly because he needed money, partly to discourage pirates ("my book is not a trinket", he declared), and partly to take advantage of the growing interest and demand for the book. [...] It was almost immediately sold out" (Hugh Ford, Published in Paris, p. 38) Attached is the subscription flyer for the first edition of Ulysses announced for September 1921. It is illustrated with an engraved vignette and a portrait of the author. Shakespeare and Company was then located at 8 rue Dupuytren. Modern spine.
