André DERAIN.
Still life, pitcher and fruit. Undated [circa 1930].
Oil on canvas (37 x 44 cm), signed lower right.
Beautiful still life by André Derain (1880-1954).
Admired by Apollinaire, whose first book he illustrated in 1909, L'Enchanteur pourrissant published by Kahnweiler, André Derain constantly renewed himself, from his Fauvist, then Cubist beginnings, to a return to a more traditional expression. In the conference he gave in Berlin in 1913, Apollinaire said of him: "André Derain, a tormented personality, lover of form and color, gave, once born to art, much more than promises, for he revealed their own personalities to those he met: the sense of symbolic colors to
Matisse, that of new sublime forms to Picasso."
