Description

Alfred Jarry.

Cyclo-guide Miran illustré des Environs de Paris (Ouest), chez Didot, in-12, 3fr 50. Without place or date [1896]. Autograph manuscript of 2 pages in-4, signed "Alfred Jarry". The only known autograph manuscript of the famous article dedicated to the Cyclo-guide Miran, according to the text published in the Mercure de France in November 1896 (n° 82). No one, without a doubt, was better placed among the contributors to the Mercure than Jarry, an experienced cyclist, to testify to the usefulness of a work addressed to cyclists who were not so much travelers as walkers, to whom they pointed out a series of excursions "practicable in half a day, or a day at the most, either in the vicinity of Paris, or, with the use of the railroad, in the vicinity of cities renowned for their pleasure or their beauty". Although we prefer to this tourism of sites and monuments, without comparison, the aesthetic emotion of the speed in the sun and the light, the visual impressions following one another with enough speed so that one retains only the resultant and especially that one lives and does not think, we can only glorify this book, series of practical itineraries with a profusion of very good photographs of all the sites, from the door of Suresnes to the cathedral of Chartres. From the collection of Marc Loliée, according to the publication Alfred Jarry, poète d'aujourd'hui (Seghers, 1951) in which the manuscript is reproduced (see Jarry, OEuvres complètes II, Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, 1987, pp. 580-581).
