Alfred Jarry.

Letter addressed to Alfred Vallette. Pont-Aven (Finistère), Hotel Gloanec, no date [end of June 1894]. Autograph letter signed of 1 page in-8. Precious letter written during the stay of the young Jarry in Pont-Aven, in company of Paul Gauguin. It is one of the rare documents testifying of the relations between the painter and the writer. He mentions the upcoming publication of his play Haldernablou at the Mercure de France, Rachilde and Laurent Tailhade. Jarry regrets not having been able to attend the creation of Rachilde's play Vendeur de soleil (Sun Seller) because of the death of his uncle Julien. He therefore decided to stay in Brittany, with Pont-Aven as his center, in the company of "Gauguin held back by his accident". On May 25, 1894, Gauguin had been involved in a fight in Concarneau, provoked by the presence of his young Javanese mistress, Annah, and their tamed monkey. A fractured leg required his transportation to Pont-Aven. Jarry then worries about the printing of his play Haldernablou: "About the proofs, I compared with horror the length of the verses of the choruses with the size of the Mercury. I believe that it will be necessary to use Roman sept, and moreover I prefer to leave you free hand for the typefaces, I recognize that I am still quite inexperienced in typography. Finally, Jarry salutes in Laurent Tailhade the faithful defender of the anarchist cause. Wounded in the attack on the Foyot restaurant in April 1894, he had just replied to his opponents at the curtain call of a performance of Phèdre at the Théâtre de la Renaissance: Congratulations to Laurent Tailhade for his estomirande attitude of lecturer tamer in Phèdre. This letter was presented at the famous Expojarrysition organized by the Collège de Pataphysique in 1953.
