First edition. One of the first 50 numbered copies on Hollande (n° 1). Novel dedicated to another "terrible year" in the history of France, 1793 will remain the only work of Victor Hugo dedicated to the Revolution. Signed autograph letter under the receipt: "to my eloquent and dear friend Ernest Lefèvre Victor Hugo 19 February 1874" Nephew of Auguste Vacquerie, the lawyer Ernest Lefèvre (1833-1889), great admirer of Victor Hugo, was also his executor. Beautiful copy bound as new. Covers rebacked.
