Description

Edmond et Jules de Goncourt.

Manette Salomon. Paris, Librairie Internationale, Bruxelles, A. Lacroix, Veboeckhoven & Cie, 1867. 2 volumes in-12 of (3) ff, 320 pp. ; (2) ff, 316 pp. half-brick morocco with corners, spine with gilt fillets and cold fleurons, untrimmed, gilt heads, covers and spine preserved (Canape). First edition. This painting of the artistic world of the middle of the XIXth century, one of the models of the realist genre, aroused Flaubert's enthusiasm: "I received the two volumes this morning at 11 a.m.- & I have just finished them. That is to say, my good men, that Manette Salomon occupied me all day. I am bewildered, dazzled, drunk. My eyes sting. [...] As for talent, it abounds. What an abundance! in the name of God! Never in your life have you been more you which is the main thing" (letter of November 13, 1867 in Flaubert, Correspondance III, Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, p. 702). Victor Hugo spoke about it in no less enthusiastic terms, while the press of the time treated the novel with contempt. Elegant copy perfectly established by Canape. From the libraries of Raoul Simonson and Louis de Sadeleer, with bookplates. Printed covers and lined spine.
