Description

André Gide.

Les Nourritures terrestres. Paris, Mercure de France, 1897. In-12, black half-chagrin with corners, spine ribbed and decorated, untrimmed, gilt head, covers preserved (binding of the time). First edition. One of twelve copies on Hollande laid paper, the only large paper with three on japon. The copy is not justified. A cult book for the younger generations for half a century, the work had a profound influence on minds as diverse as Léon Blum, Roger Martin du Gard, Philippe Soupault, Henry de Montherlant and Maurice Blanchot. Autograph signed letter : Exemplaire de Bernard Monod/heureux de voir ce livre en de/si bonnes mains/André Gide/July 1925. A fine copy from the Louis de Sadeleer library, with bookplate. A dispatch has been erased on the false title: according to a pencil note written at the head, it was the dedicatee, Maurice Quillot.
