Paris, Desessart, 1844. 2 volumes in-8 of (2) ff, 331 pp, (1) f. of table; (2) ff, 326 pp, (1) f. of table : brick morocco, richly decorated ribbed spine, blue morocco title and greef, triple fillet framing the boards, gold filleted edges, decorated inner borders, gilt edges on marbling (Brany). First edition. Gallery of portraits of "poets of the second order": François Villon, Scalion de Virbluneau, Théophile de Viau, Pierre de Saint-Louis, Saint-Amant, Cyrano de Bergerac, Colletet, Chapelain, Georges de Scudéry, Paul Scarron. Gautier thus delivers one of the first rehabilitations of Villon and the old baroque poets. A very nice copy in decorated morocco by Brany. Scattered foxing. Some annotations in pencil in volume II. Slight rubbing to the binding.
