Second novel of the Duchess of Duras, with which she renewed the success, one year after Ourika. A sharp attack against class prejudice, it presents a story of impossible love and is said to have inspired, among others, Le Rouge et le Noir.
Like its predecessor, it was first published in a confidential edition of 100 copies.
