The motives of this poem in 150 alexandrines composed by Charles Cros in the last year of his life, marked by health troubles, are unknown. "It is not improbable that a political group of the Aude, interested in the success of the plans of the new canal, asked a poet native of the country to put his inspiration and his talent at its service" (Louis Forestier).
