Yatagan and its scabbard Ottoman world, 19th century Length 78 cm / 83,5 cm with scabbard This yatagan has a typical steel blade, with an inner edge. It is decorated on both both sides with calligraphic inscriptions, probably a religious formula evoking Zulfikar, as well as a signature. A gilded copper plate covers the ferrule and the heel of the blade. applied filigree decoration, and decorated on each side with a green glass bead. The typical handle with ears, and double marine ivory plates is fixed by nails on both sides of a on both sides of a gilded copper edge with applied decoration, itself decorated with oblong coral beads engraved with delicate lines. It is accompanied by its scabbard covered with silver plates embossed with floral motifs. The upper part of the silver scabbard alternates between friezes of braids in relief and three registers of floral motifs in repoussé inlaid with engraved coral beads. A comparable weapon with coral bead decoration is in the Metropolitan Museum (Inv. n°36.25.1338a,b). (Wear and tear to the scabbard)
