Description

Maria VIEIRA DA SILVA (1908-1992)

Plombs, 1971, (Rivière, 114). Lithograph in five colors on Japon nacré, signed in pencil lower right, justified HC and numbered IV - XXX. 75 x 46 cm. Bibliography : Work reproduced in plate 114 of the catalog raisonné of the artist's prints. A major figure of the School of Paris, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva became internationally renowned in the 1950s for her labyrinthine compositions. Her work, between figuration and abstraction, shows a permanent exploration of perception and weaves strong links between painting, mosaic, tapestry and architecture. In "Plombs" the artist constructs the space by a labyrinthine network in which the gaze likes to get lost to infinity, not without evoking the art of stained glass in which Maria Vieira Da Silva was notably illustrated in the church of Saint-Jacques de Reims in the same years. The touches of ochre color accentuating the luminosity of the zones left in reserve in the middle of this lead frame let us imagine the light crossing the pearly japanese, like a paper window.
