Description

Frédéric Anatole HOUBRON (1851-1908) View of the foreign pavilions of the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1900 Oil on canvas. Signed, located and dated lower left. 35,5 x 70 cm The 1900 World's Fair occupied a vast perimeter encompassing the Champ de Mars, the esplanade des Invalides, part of the Champs-Élysées and the Trocadero; the pavilions of the foreign powers were grouped together on the portion of the Quai d'Orsay between the bridges of the Invalides and the Alma, forming what was known as the "rue des Nations. It is a part of this "rue des Nations" that Houbron has represented here; one can identify, from left to right, the pavilions of Italy, Turkey, the United States, Austria, Bosnia, Hungary, England, Belgium, Norway, Germany, Spain, Monaco and Sweden. The mixture of the various national styles created, as one sees, a highly picturesque whole, with the almost unreal character, which largely contributed to the success of the demonstration
