Antonio JACOBSEN (1850-1921)

The Normandie, a mixed ship with 4 masts and 2 chimneys Oil on canvas, signed in red at the bottom left and dated 1888 54 x 90 cm (small restorations visible on the back of the canvas) The Normandy Launched on October 28, 1882, the Normandie was the first ship of the transatlantic company to pass the capacity of 1000 passengers. On May 5, 1883, she made her first voyage from Le Havre to New York in 8 days and 11 hours. In 1886, the ship was renamed La Normandie. It remained in service until 1912, when it was sold for demolition.

The liner Normandie was launched on October 29, 1932, in front of a large crowd. Marguerite Lebrun, wife of the President and godmother of the ship, broke the traditional bottle of champagne on her bow. After a lengthy refit, the liner was inaugurated in Le Havre on May 23, 1935, at a gala dinner for some 1,000 guests held on board. At the time, Normandie was the world's largest ocean liner, breaking the Atlantic crossing record on her maiden voyage.
