Description

[REVIEW]. The Independent Review of Literature and Art. New series. Paris, 1886-1888. Together 25 issues in 9 volumes in-8, bradel red percaline, smooth spine, brown title page, untrimmed, cover and spine (H. Capelle). Almost complete collection of this third series directed by Édouard Dujardin (1861-1949), poet and disciple of Mallarmé. It includes the first 25 issues published from November 1886 to November 1888. The only missing issue is No. 26, published in December 1888. Under Dujardin's impetus, this important journal became the spearhead of symbolist poetry. Initially directed by Fénéon from 1884 to 1886, the review welcomed various authors such as Verlaine, Huysmans, Mallarmé, Laforgue, Villiers de L'Isle-Adam, etc. One of the 100 deluxe copies, printed on various large papers: japon (vol. I), hollande (vol. II), chine (vol. III), vélin du Marais (vol. IV), and colored papers of various colors including papier bleuuté (vol. VI) and papier jonquille (vol. VIII and IX). These luxury copies are the only ones illustrated: a total of 31 plates, including 4 studies by James Whistler (in no. 1, here in double state, on japon and on chine), an original lithograph by Odilon Redon (no. 6), a drawing by Renoir (no. 11), a lithograph by Paul Signac (n° 15), 4 etchings by Camille Pissarro (n° 16 to 19), a lithograph by Maximilien Luce (n° 22), a woodcut by Lucien Pissarro (n° 24) and an etching by Jacques-Émile Blanche (n° 25). Autograph letter from Dujardin to Émile Soldi (1846-1906), sculptor and cameo cutter, grand prix de Rome, and art writer. The n°?1 of May 1st 1885, unique and extremely rare issue of the second series (one large volume in-8, 32 pages) is enclosed. It contains notably the beginning of an article on Zola by Hennequin, and that of an article by Charles Henry on Le Livre de l'avenir. From the library of Paul Muret. Some spotting and foxing, small losses to the covers. Small tears, stains and holes to the last leaf of the single issue, with loss of words.
