Photographien 1957-1997, München/Paris/London 1999, pl. 18 (same series) In the book editions of “The Germans”, a very similar motif was included in portrait format, also with the juxtaposition of VW Volkswagen and Mercedes Benz (cropped in the foreground), but there a passer-by crosses the street. The present, thus calmer, shot is captivating because of its more austere composition. In die Buchausgaben von »Die Deutschen« wurde ein sehr ähnliches Motiv im Hochformat aufgenommen, ebenfalls mit der Gegenüberstellung von VW Volkswagen und Mercedes Benz (angeschnitten im Vordergrund), aber ergänzt um eine Passantin beim Überqueren der Straße. Die vorliegende, somit ruhigere, Aufnahme besticht durch die strengere Komposition.
