Curtis. The life and time of a shadow catcher, San Francisco 1985, p. 145. Curtis researched the culture of the North American Indians since 1896. Until 1927 he was travelling through the country and took pictures for his monumental, 20 tome encompassing oeuvre “The North American Indian”. Many of his portraits are staged, as the original culture of the Indians was extinct. Curtis used the Orotone process extensively around 1910, at the height of his career. The process involved the making of an ordinary negative, which was then printed on another glass plate, precoated with a silver gelatin emulsion, to produce a positive. This positive was then backed in gold. The offered work of a Wishham Indian catching salmon shows the artist’s preference for Pictorialist image design. As the photograph, the original studio frame is preserved in perfect condition. Curtis beschäftigte sich seit 1896 mit der Kultur der nordamerikanischen Indianer, bis 1927 bereiste er das Land und machte Aufnahmen für sein monumentales, 20 Bände umfassendes Werk „The North American Indian“. Viele seiner Porträts sind inszeniert, da die originäre Kultur der Indianer größtenteils nicht mehr existierte. Er verwendete den Orotone-Prozess ausgiebig um 1910, am Höhepunkt seiner Karriere. Ein Orotone basiert auf einem normalen Glasnegativ, welches dann auf eine weitere, mit Silbergelatine-Emulsion bearbeitete Glasplatte geprintet wird. Das dadurch entstehende Positiv wird golden hintermalt. Die Aufnahme eines Wishham-Indianers beim Lachsfang zeigt Curtis’ Vorliebe für piktorialistische Bildgestaltung. Der originale Studio-Rahmen ist wie die Fotografie in perfektem Zustand erhalten.
