The present lot is a reproduction made shortly afterwards. It shows the view from the Leopoldstadt bank of the Danube Canal over the Ferdinandsbrücke (later called Schwedenbrücke) to the Laurenzertor, with the Rotenturmtor to the right. The gates were part of the Baroque fortification wall, which Emperor Franz Josef had demolished shortly afterwards. A very similar motif was still published in 1889 (when the Wall had long since disappeared) as a coloured correspondence card “Gruß aus Alt-Wien” (Greetings from Old Vienna), many copies of which have survived. Das von erhöhtem Standpunkt aufgenommene Panorama wurde ursprünglich als Salzpapierabzug ausgearbeitet, das vorliegende Los ist eine wenig später hergestellte Reproduktion. Die Ansicht zeigt den Blick vom Leopoldstädter Ufer des Donaukanals über die Ferdinandsbrücke (welche später in Schwedenbrücke umbenannt wurde) auf das Laurenzertor, rechts seitlich das Rothenturmtor. Die Tore waren Teil des barocken Befestigungswalls, den Kaiser Franz Josef bald nach Entstehung der Aufnahme abgetragen ließ. Ein sehr ähnliches Motiv wurde noch 1889 (als der Wall längst verschwunden war) als kolorierte Correspondenz-Karte „Gruß aus Alt-Wien“ aufgelegt, von der sich viele Exemplare erhalten haben.
