HERMANN (né en 1938)

Bernard Prince - Le port des fous Gouache on paper for the cover of the last album of the series drawn by Hermann. 29,5 x 24,7 cm. Lombard, 1978. Bernard Prince is the first great saga that allows Hermann to be known by the general public. Based on the scenarios of Greg, one of the references of the time, the draftsman works on it from 1965 and thus starts working for the Journal Tintin. The Port of Fools is a story that the artist is particularly fond of, because he has invested a lot of time in it. Having lived 20 years in Canada, he manages to restore all the strength of the elements. "The Port of Fools is one of my favorite Prince episodes," he explains in the Black & White series. "It is remarkable in every way. Although I don't live in filth, I like to express the rustic. Drawing a child or a young girl with a very smooth face is boring... You need an economy of line. On the other hand, an elderly character, all wrinkled, is juicier for the draftsman: there is a pleasure in the line that I find when drawing a rusty cargo ship! There is a whole symphony of lines that I like more than a clean and tidy apartment." This symphony is found in this cover that Hermann realized here in colors. Certainly one of the summits of the artist's work.
