Snowy forest at dusk. Oil on canvas, signed lower right in Russian. In a beautiful gilded wooden frame with cartouche. H. 46,5 x W. 55 cm. Provenance French private collection since the 1980s. History Of Polish origin, Stanislas Joukovsky is considered one of the most virtuoso masters of the lyrical landscape. Strongly influenced by the teaching and work of Isaac Levitan, Zhukovsky developed a personal style characterized by broad brushstrokes and high-contrast colors. His favorite subjects were interiors, the old abandoned manors of the Russian aristocracy, but especially landscapes with a preference for autumn and spring lights. Recognized and honored during his lifetime, the Russian revolution forced him to leave Soviet Russia in 1923 for his original homeland, Poland. Remaining in Warsaw when the Second World War broke out, Joukovsky was arrested and deported to the Pruszkowo concentration camp where he died. He left behind him a marvelous production, including our painting, still unknown to this day, which is a perfect testimony of it.
