Description

Original work/Pierre Bobo. Oil on canvas "The Choice" signed and dated 2009. 112 X 95 cm quality frame included. Camille-Pierre Pambu Bodo (1953-2015) is a Congolese painter known as BODO or ART BODO. Born and raised in Mandu in the province of Bas-Congo in the DRC, Bodo left high school in 1970 and moved to Kinshasa, where he participated in the "Art Partout" exhibition. He is one of the founders and main promoters, along with Moké and Chéri Samba, of what is known as the "school of popular painting" in the DRC. Their works express with strength and frankness their conviction and their ability to create an art that can change the society in which they live. Most of these scenes meet partially or totally human figures, in a landscape where he integrates flora and fauna and underwater life to display his perceptions of the places he has known. He paints from sight or experience. Bodo's style is reminiscent of Hieronymous Bosch's work... In the 1990's, his art style evolves towards fantasy and incorporates symbolism to share his dreams of a better world. He integrates in his artistic work, a fantastic and symbolic nature. Most of Bodo's work is considered somewhat surreal. His painting is open to a non-religious style, but the imaginary creatures remain predominant. His works are in the following collections: Tate modern (London), Guggenheim Bilbao, the Pigozzi collection (Geneva), Fondation Cartier (Paris). Auction records for the artist: -Artcurial in 2017: 12,500 EUR - Bonhams in 2019: 10.000 EUR - Pierre Bergé in 2010: EUR 8,000 - Cornette de Saint Cyr in 2018: EUR 7,000
