Description

Alaska/Inuit. Mask of dance or shaman in carved wood polychrome. Quality opening with its original polychromy. 2nd half of the 20th century. H 38 X 18 cm including base. The term "Inuit art" in fact groups together a large number of distinct ethnic groups and does not correspond to a homogeneous culture. This explains their great diversity of artistic expression. Masks are widely used for dancing in religious ceremonies or festivals. For many years, the Inuit have maintained an annual cycle of ceremonies and festival celebrations that include Arctic storytelling, singing and masked feats and performances. The reason for these events is to seek spiritual guidance with the help of Shamans and to get in touch with the spirits of nature.
