DRC/Salampasu. Mukinka" mask in carved wood entirely covered with copper plating. Middle of the 20th century. H 60 X 22 cm including base. The Salampasu masks, very famous, are recognizable by their bulging forehead, their elongated eyes, their triangular nose and their rectangular mouth revealing the teeth. These masks were used in ceremonies related to the warrior society. In the Salampasu culture, the male individual becomes a man step by step, provided that he submits to the successive stages through which he conforms to the role of the hero "Mbanji" and which allow him to claim one or other type of mask.
