Friedrich REHBERG (1758-1835) Lady Hamilton mourning the death of Lord Nelson Watercolor on paper Signed with monogram FR Titled in pencil: "Too late to see him" 15.5 x 21 cm In 1794, Friedrich Rehberg, then in the service of the King of Prussia in Rome, drew a series of portraits of Lady Hamilton showing her in Greek costume and adopting another of her famous attitudes, later engraved by Thomas Piroli. This beautiful work represents Lady Hamilton mourning her lover, Admiral Horatio Nelson, who died in 1805. Lady Hamilton is sitting by the sea, with sailing ships on the horizon, symbolizing the loss of the sailor. Nelson's feathered hat sits at her feet. The title is in English because Rehberg moved to London where he died. Framed under glass and beautiful gilded rod
