Description

Two fragmentary Persian star-shaped tiles Siliceous paste with molded and painted decoration in cobalt for one, and with metallic lustre and cobalt decoration for the other. Iran, late 13th - early 14th century, Ilkhanid period. Broken and glued, documentary condition. 20.5 x 17.5 cm (glossy tile) and 30 x 29 cm (star tile) The first one presents a molded decoration of vegetal and floral motifs in white on a cobalt background. This decoration of Far Eastern inspiration is part of a group of ceramics often associated with the production of Sultanabad. The Louvre holds a fragment of a star with the same decoration (inv. n° MAO 936/575). The second is decorated with a metallic chandelier, with a simurgh bird on a floral background, framed by a calligraphic frieze on a cobalt background. This decoration of various animals on lustrous stars is typical of Kashan production in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. A tile with a similar decoration is kept in the Louvre Museum (inv. n°OA 3869/76).
