Description

Jean-François LELEU (1729 - Paris, 1807 ; maître en 1764)

MAHOGA CHEST TOP Louis XVI period Mahogany on oak frame; gilt bronze; turquoise marble H. 98 cm, W. 163.5 cm, D. 64.5 cm Stamped This elegant chest of drawers, stamped by Jean- François Leleu, is topped with a turquoise blue marble whose moulded contours with a raised edge match those of the tripartite front. The fluted uprights, decorated with gilded bronze fleurons, rest on tapered feet, with flattened ball-shaped shoes. Our piece of furniture, which opens to three drawers in the belt and two drawers without crossbar, is distinguished from the other tripartite fronted chests of drawers by Leleu by the arrangement of its gilt bronze trim. The grips, forming a portico around the central front and the single lock, make the shape of our chest of drawers similar to that of an antique triumphal arch.
