Attribué à Martin Carlin (Fribourg-en-Brisgau, vers 1730 - Paris, 1785) ou à Adrien Faizelot-Delorme (Paris, 1715-1783 ; maître en 1748)

COMMODE IN MARQUETRY WITH GEOMETRIC DECORATION Paris, Louis XVI period Rosewood, amaranth, satinwood, hornbeam, boxwood and ebony on oak frame; gilt bronzes; Carrara marble H. 91 cm, W. 128 cm, D. 59 cm Fire mark : M W This very beautiful neo-classical chest of drawers presents an elegant marquetry with geometrical decoration centered on quartefoils on a rosewood background. Its front is animated by a central projection finished in apron. It opens to two drawers "without crossbar" and two side doors. Under the Carrara marble top, the belt decorated with a frieze of gilt bronze interlacing conceals a row of three narrow drawers. Its rich gilded bronze trim and its trompe-l'oeil inlaid decoration, simulating a trellis motif in relief centered on quatrefoil fleurons, link it to a set of chests of drawers stamped by the cabinetmaker Adrien Faizelot-Delorme that belonged to Madame de Polès or to Monsieur Rikoff (fig. 1 and 2). We find the same double crown of laurel leaves and roses on the uprights as well as the medallion profiles in the handles of the middle drawers and the covered vase with acanthus scrolls intermingled with Greek on the apron. The chest of drawers presented here is distinguished by the attention to detail in the refinement of its marble top and the quality of the marquetry, which places it on a par with the most beautiful creations of Martin Carlin (fig. 3).
